A score you cannot audit is an advertisement. HypeScore™ is four pillars of twenty-five points each, computed from the manufacturer's published specification and the current street price. The total is arithmetic — it is never typed in by hand, and it is never for sale.
Movement & reserve
/ 25Movement type and calibre, beat rate, power reserve, hacking and hand-winding, and any independent chronometer certification. A quartz movement is not penalised for being quartz; it is scored on what it actually delivers.
Build & materials
/ 25Case material and finishing, crystal (sapphire, mineral or acrylic), water resistance and whether it is independently rated, bracelet or strap construction, and clasp design including micro-adjust.
Value at price
/ 25Everything above, divided by the current street price rather than the recommended retail price. This is the pillar that moves most, because prices move. It is also the only reason a $120 watch can outscore a $1,200 one.
Wearability
/ 25Diameter, thickness and lug-to-lug against real wrists, lug width and how easily the watch takes a different strap, legibility, and how many of the places you actually go it suits.
The four rules behind it
One. Every number in a scored entry comes from the manufacturer's own published specification, and the source is printed on the page. Where a maker does not publish a figure, the Atlas says so rather than estimating it.
Two. The total is derived from the four sub-scores at render time. There is no total field anywhere in this site's data, which means a score cannot be adjusted without adjusting the reasoning that produced it.
Three. Scores are never for sale, and no placement in any guide is ever paid for. Where a link earns a commission it is disclosed on the page and in the affiliate disclosure.
Four. A score is a snapshot at a price. When the street price moves far enough, the value pillar moves with it and the entry is rescored. The date on each page is the date the arithmetic last ran.
What the verdicts mean
Solid buy — the specification justifies the price and we would recommend it without qualification. Hidden gem — it outperforms its price bracket by a margin the market has not caught up with. Worth a look — good, with real caveats named on the page. Overhyped — the price is buying something other than the watch.
